BALTIMORE – Acting Maryland Insurance Commissioner Marie Grant has named Joy Y. Hatchette as Deputy Commissioner of the Maryland Insurance Administration. Since 2004, Hatchette has served as the associate commissioner for the Insurance Administration's Consumer Education and Advocacy Unit. She was responsible for overseeing outreach to Maryland consumers so they can better understand their rights and obligations under their insurance policies.
From July to September this year, Hatchette served as Interim Commissioner of the Insurance Administration, overseeing the agency during the search for a new Insurance Commissioner.
“Joy's professionalism and extensive knowledge of our agency's operations are a true asset," Acting Commissioner Grant said. “Her leadership over the years has helped define the Maryland Insurance Administration as a national leader in consumer protection and education. I look forward to working closely with Joy to help make a great agency even better."
Previously, Hatchette served as associate commissioner for consumer complaints at the Insurance Administration from 1997 to 2004. From 1993 until 1997 she served as an Assistant Attorney General for the MIA.
From 1988 to 1993, she was an associate in the law offices of Gordon, Feinblatt, Rothman, Hoffberger and Hollander. For two years prior to that, she served as a judicial law clerk for the United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
In 2016, Hatchette was appointed to the Maryland Commission on Aging and served two four-year terms. As a member of the Maryland Commission on Aging, she was one of 13 members charged with reviewing programs and activities for older adults and making program recommendations to the Maryland Secretary of Aging.
She is a graduate of the University of Virginia Law School and is a member of the bar associations in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
