BALTIMORE - Maryland Insurance Commissioner Kathleen A. Birrane has named Tammy R.J. Longan as Associate Deputy Commissioner for the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA).
In that role, Longan will oversee the MIA’s Office of Hearings, which conducts approximately 85 administrative hearings and issues approximately 230 administrative orders each year. In addition, Longan has been tapped to coordinate the work of the MIA’s newly established Office of Innovation and Transformation, which houses the working groups within the MIA that are focused on cybersecurity, innovation and technology, climate and resiliency, DEI and workforce initiatives in insurance, and regulatory oversight of the use of big data and artificial intelligence in the Maryland insurance market.
Longan has extensive experience in the insurance industry. She comes to the MIA after a 17-year career at Chesapeake Employers’ Insurance Company (formerly the Injured Workers’ Insurance Fund). Since 2015, Longan served as Director of the Strategic Business Unit, where she managed a $37 million book of business and supervised 15 employees.
“Tammy is a great addition to the MIA’s Executive Staff,” said Commissioner Birrane. “Her knowledge, experience and excellent leadership abilities will be invaluable in coordinating the day-to-day operations of the Office of Hearings, as well as assuring that our innovation and technology projects remain focused and on track.” Prior to joining Chesapeake, Longan was an Assistant Public Defender in Baltimore. Earlier, she was a Claims Representative for Progressive Insurance. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Old Dominion University and a J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law.
“The Maryland Insurance Administration has a great reputation as an efficient and fair regulator of Maryland’s insurance industry,” Longan said. “I am thrilled to join such a strong team.”
