Gregory M. Derwart named Deputy Commissioner of the Maryland Insurance Administration

BALTIMORE – Maryland Insurance Commissioner Kathleen A. Birrane has named Gregory M. Derwart as Deputy Commissioner of the Maryland Insurance Administration.

Since July 2020, Derwart has served as Chief of Staff for the Administration, acting as a strategic advisor to Commissioner Birrane, directing operational activities, leading special projects and coordinating the Administration’s engagement with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

As Deputy Commissioner, Derwart will supervise and manage administrative operations within the Office of the Commissioner, including human resources, information technology, procurement, and fiscal services.

“Greg has been an exceptional Chief of Staff and I am delighted that the Administration will have the full benefit of his managerial and operational skills in his new role as Deputy,” Commissioner Birrane said. “The administrative operations that the Deputy oversees and manages are critical to the fulfillment of our enforcement and consumer protection activities. Greg is a great asset to the Administration, as well as a talented and focused leader and a valued colleague.”

Derwart has extensive experience in state government. From 2015 to 2019, he was Managing Director, Administration & Customer Experience, at the Maryland Department of Commerce. During his tenure, he led Governor Larry Hogan’s statewide Customer Service Promise initiative, conducting research and implementing improvement plans across 40 state agencies, including training, recognition programs, performance metrics, and satisfaction surveys.

Derwart also served as Director, Division of Administration, for the Maryland Transportation Authority from 2005 to 2007.

"I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to serve the MIA, the Hogan Administration, and the citizens of Maryland in this new role," Derwart said. "The operational responsibility of the Deputy Commissioner is an essential component of the MIA's efficiency, and I look forward to contributing to its continued success."

Immediately prior to joining the Maryland Insurance Administration, Derwart was Chief Operating Officer at Maller Wealth Advisors in Hunt Valley, Md.  During his career, he also served as Chief Operating Officer at the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and The Arc of Baltimore.
