Vaccine Coverage

The Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) reminds Maryland residents that, under state law, private health insurance and Medicaid still cover many vaccines and immunizations.

To ensure that Marylanders can keep getting vaccines, state law requires insurers to cover the full cost of all vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).

Additionally, the Maryland Secretary of Health is authorized by state law to make statewide recommendations for immunizations, screenings, and preventive services, following the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Carriers are also required by state law to cover the cost of vaccines included in the Maryland Health Secretary’s recommendations.

The Maryland Department of Health has released the 2026-2027 vaccine schedules and recommendations for Maryland’s children and adults in advance of the respiratory virus season. For those who are uninsured or underinsured, you may be able to access vaccines at no cost through the Maryland Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program and the Maryland Vaccine Program.

State law also authorizes pharmacists to administer any vaccine the Maryland Secretary of Health recommends under this new process, expanding the scope of existing legislation that already allows pharmacists to administer flu and COVID vaccines without a prescription to anyone age three and older.

If you have any questions, concerns or complaints regarding vaccine coverage, please reach out to the Health Coverage Assistance Team (H-CAT).
