Historical Information

1872 ~ The Maryland Insurance Administration was created under the jurisdiction of the State Comptroller.

1878 ~ The agency was renamed the State Insurance Department and became an independent State agency reporting directly to the Governor.

1970 ~ A gubernatorial commission restructured State government and the State Insurance Department became a division of the newly created Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

1993 ~ The Maryland General Assembly created an independent Maryland Insurance Administration.
