Maryland Insurance Commissioner Marie Grant leads the 300-employee Maryland Insurance Administration, which regulates the state’s $50 billion-plus insurance industry.

Commissioner Grant is an attorney and state and federal policy expert with more than 20 years of experience in policy, strategy, and regulation in both the public and private sectors, primarily in the insurance and health care payment fields. Commissioner Grant’s vision for the MIA is to ensure that all Marylanders have access to understandable and affordable insurance products that protect them against financial devastation, provided by a stable insurance industry that is regulated with fairness and transparency.

During Commissioner Grant’s tenure, the agency has recovered more than $150 million by helping resolve insurance-related issues and complaints, while reducing complaint and rates-and-forms backlogs across the agency’s divisions and supporting strong actuarial review that results in lower approved rates for Maryland consumers.

At the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) in 2026, Commissioner Grant serves as the Chair of the B Committee’s Regulatory Framework Task Force, the Chair of the Homeowners Market Report Working Group, the Vice Chair of the Northeast Zone, and the Treasurer of the Interstate Insurance Compact.

Commissioner Grant is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University with a B.A. in public health and received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.​
