Maryland Insurance Administration Joins Nextdoor to Educate Marylanders about Insurance

18% of Marylanders did not know that homeowners’ insurance policies exclude flooding

​BALTIMORE – The Maryland Insurance Administration today announced that it has joined Nextdoor, the free and private neighborhood social network, in order to improve communications with, and better educate, Marylanders within their local communities. The Administration has been participating in a pilot program with Nextdoor since August 2018 and joins as the first government insurance administration to utilize Nextdoor.

By joining Nextdoor, the Maryland Insurance Administration hopes to better understand what information needs to be communicated in order to better educate Marylanders about their insurance policies. In a recent Nextdoor poll, the Administration asked Nextdoor participants if they understood that most homeowners insurance policies do not cover flooding. Of the nearly 3,000 residents who responded, 18% were unaware that flooding was not covered. The Maryland Insurance Administration then provided information to these participants to educate them on the steps recommended to better protect their family and home.

“Through the diligence of a very knowledgeable staff, the Insurance Administration strives to increase public understanding of the vital role insurance plays in our daily lives by better educating Marylanders about the coverage provided by their insurance policies. Using Nextdoor has helped us reach more Marylanders and increase their level of knowledge of insurance policies, which has in turn allowed us to better serve them,” said Commissioner Al Redmer, Jr.

Nextdoor is free for neighborhood residents and the Maryland Insurance Administration. The Administration is proud to join over 3,200 public agencies across the country on Nextdoor and looks forward to building even stronger relationships with the residents of all of our Maryland neighborhoods.
