Insurance Commissioner Issues Bulletin Encouraging Insurance Carriers to Provide Reasonable Accommodation for the Payment of Premiums on Automobile and Homeowner Policies in Maryland Following Winter Storm Jonas

BALTIMORE – In light of Gov. Larry Hogan’s January 21, 2016 Executive Order declaring a State of Emergency in Maryland for winter storm Jonas, Insurance Commissioner Al Redmer, Jr. today urged insurance carriers to provide reasonable accommodations to policyholders displaced or otherwise significantly impacted by the storm.

Commissioner Redmer asked insurance companies to consider giving consumers a grace period for payment of their automobile and homeowners insurance premiums if the delay was due to Winter Storm Jonas. “I issued Bulletin 16-05 because this historic weather event disrupted the lives of many Maryland consumers, and therefore I would ask the companies to consider these special circumstances before canceling a consumer's policy.”
