Under Subtitle 8-202 of the Insurance Article, Annotated Code of Maryland, a person must obtain a certificate of qualification before the person acts as a managing general agent (MGA) in Maryland. An applicant for a certificte of qualification must be licensed as an insurance producer under Title 10, Subtitle 1 of the Insurance Article, Annotated Code of Maryland. An appointment from each insurer that the agent/MGA will represent must be obtained to be qualified to act as an agent/MGA. After the Agent Certificate and an appointment from each insurer to be represented are obtained, a person can apply for a Certificate of Qualification as an MGA under Title 8, Subtitle 2 and Subtitle 2-112 of the Insurance Article, Annotated Code of Maryland.
A contract must be in-force between the insurer and the MGA. Contracts must include each required contract provision set forth in Subtitle 8-208 of the Insurance Article, Annotated Code of Maryland and each prohibited act set forth in Subtitle 8-209 of the Insurance Article, Annotated Code of Maryland.

The Maryland Certificate of Qualification expires annually on June 30. An MGA wishing to renew its Certificate of Qualification can now apply online between April 1 and June 30 in accordance with §§8-205 and 2-112 of the Insurance Article, Annotated Code of Maryland.
The renewal process can be completed without attaching any other paperwork. You will be required to pay the renewal fee totaling $30 using a Visa, Mastercard, or eCheck. There is no extra charge for renewing online. If you renew by credit card, the charge on your statement will be shown as "Maryland Insurance Administration".
